The Irish Times reported on Tuesday about the death of a Sligo man from head injuries after an assault in his home, however according to Pink News, 60-year-old Cyril Moran was a "vulnerable" gay man whom neighbours believe was taken advantage of.
Several complaints about anti-social behaviour at his address had been received by police but his friends told the media that he did not take drugs.
One told the Daily Mirror: "There were a lot of hangers-on in the house. Cyril was gay and these guys would pretend to be gay as well. There were people coming out of the house off their heads.
"I don't think anyone believes he [Cyril] was in to anything like that. He was a harmless divil."

Yes apparently. Statistically speaking anyway.
And before you write off this study as superficial bigotry, it actually makes a lot of sense. As this article says:
The authors note previous work showing how more attractive people are more successful in their careers and earn more. This puts less attractive people at a disadvantage in the world of work and nudges them towards criminal alternatives. In addition, less attractive people suffer socially, make fewer friends and build less of what the authors call "human capital". They are therefore not as sympathetic to others and have less of an investment in society. This effect is far more pronounced in females, suggesting that they are judged on their appearance to a much greater degree.
The message seems to be that ugly people need a bit less condemnation and a bit more understanding. But that finding lacks the popular appeal of saying that they're all criminals and should be locked up, and so is probably doomed to be added to the file of Damned science.

The internet continues to expose the depressingly stupid underbelly of society.
As soon as troubled murderer and fugitive from justice Raul Moat had killed himself in the full glare of the media, Facebook groups started to appear hailing him as some kind of hero. The largest of these groups, which had over 35,000 members within days, was called RIP Raul Moat You Legend.
Predictably, it was the subject of a lot of outrage, and even the British Prime Minister condemned it, though others defended it, and some ridiculed David Cameron for reacting to it. Facebook refused to take it down.
The group was set up by an idiot called Siobhan O'Dowd, and though she eventually took down the page after the criticisms (other similar groups remain), she is unrepentant, and defended the group to a number of papers.
She also gave this gobsmacking interview to a radio station. At times like this it's hard not to reevaluate eugenics in a more positive light. This woman has children you know. Can't we take them off her and give them to a nice lesbian couple? Or those male penguins in that German zoo?

Sometimes Italians defy their hot-headed reputation and just go, "Meh".
Armed robber enters supermarket, customers hardly raise an eyebrow, cashier shrugs, kids hang around to look, armed robber leaves feeling like an eejit.

My dad used to work in a meat factory, and they are odd places. Now an interesting study in the US has shown that as the number of sluaghterhouse workers increases in a community, the rate of violent crime also goes up.
Nor can the violence be blamed on factory work itself. Fitzgerald compared slaughterhouse communities to those with comparison industries - dangerous, repetitive work that did not involve killing animals. These were not associated with a rise in crime at all, she says. In some cases, they seemed to bring the crime rate down.
"The unique thing about (abattoirs) is that (workers are) not dealing with inanimate objects, but instead dealing with live animals coming in and then killing them, and processing what's left of them."

Interview magazine has a lengthy and interesting interview with Michael Alig, legendary Club Kid, infamous Party Monster and 90's New York nightlife prince, who's arrest for the gruesome murder of a drug dealer in 1996 heralded the death of the city's notoriously debauched and creative club scene. Alig is likely to be released from prison soon.
(side note: one small detail jumped out at me - he's never used a mobile phone or the internet. Wow. 1996 was a world away)
Alig, now 43, enters one of the cinderblock conference rooms wearing a dark green uniform. He seems slightly speedy from his medication but says he is much happier to be in Coxsackie after being sent to Southport-a Max A-as punishment for previously being caught with Percocet in his system. Alig has a quick smile so reminiscent of a boy's that it is not hard to imagine him back on the dance floor at Limelight, leading his young apostles into another spontaneous Club Kid spectacle. He wears wirerim glasses now, and while he's never used a cell phone or surfed the Internet-two technological advancements that would have made much of the Club Kid ethos either impossible or much more viral-he keeps uptodate by reading magazines and talking to the friends he has kept since the early '90s. Alig tells me that after he has completed a compulsory drugtreatment program, he may be released as soon as this fall. In truth, his future is in the hands of the parole board, and he could remain in lockup until as late as 2016.

The Times reports that the two atheist authors are hoping to have the Pope arrested when he visits Britain in September.
RICHARD DAWKINS, the atheist campaigner, is planning a legal ambush to have the Pope arrested during his state visit to Britain “for crimes against humanity”.
Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author, have asked human rights lawyers to produce a case for charging Pope Benedict XVI over his alleged cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic church.
The pair believe they can exploit the same legal principle used to arrest Augusto Pinochet, the late Chilean dictator, when he visited Britain in 1998.
UPDATE: Richard Dawkins is not happy with some of the Times article, though he does support the legal challenge and he and Hitchens did get it started.

I'm wrestling bears at the Bear Féile tonight, and then in the morning I'm off to Galway for the Irish Blog Awards.
In the meantime, I'll leave with you some more stuff on the "Manson Girls".
This is an interesting piece by film director John Waters about his relationship with Manson Girl Leslie Van Houten.
And below is a two part interview from 1989 with Sandra Good.
I should warn you however that the third clip is not for the faint-hearted. It's a disturbing clip from the documentary Manson that I posted some of earlier. In it, one of the Manson Girls describes a horrifying "sex suicide". It's a glimpse into the dark heart of humanity.
I warned you about this clip.
(thanks Brian)

This clip is from a 1973 documentary about the Manson Family, and features bizarre interviews with some of the Manson Girls. The film was shot after Charles Manson had been arrested for the Tate/laBianca murders, and in it the women are still completely under his thrall. One of the interviewees is "Squeaky" Fromme who later tried to assassinate President Gerald Ford. After her arrest the documentary was "banned" in order to try and ensure that she could get a fair trial.

So, you're adopted, and you eventually decide to trace your biological parents, and then you find out your dad is... Charles Manson!
