You'd be hard pressed to find a video with a more greuesome cast than this anti-abortion ad from EWTN Ireland (Eternal Word Television Network - no, me neither. It's a Catholic TV station broadcasting on the web, "24 hours a day, 365 days a year")
The ad is effective though - after watching it I'm considering becoming a doctor just so I can perform abortions!
And I know it's petty of me to pick on the little things, but educated people who don't know what "literally" means is one of my pet hates. (In this case it's pro life solicitor/mouth piece Caroline Simons, whom you may have seen on Vincent Brown's show last night giving a master class in condesension, and Irish Times journalist John Waters)
"But in recent times there has literally been a tsunami hitting Ireland..."
No there hasn't. We've had a bit of rain alright, but last time I checked a giant wave hadn't hit the country recently.
And as for, "This battle can only be won if we are on our knees", well, I'll let you make your own off-colour jokes!

This seems misguided to me. An ad for Always menstrual pads that features "some of East London's finest transvestites" crying over the fact that they don't have periods. Except that they aren't really transvestites, they're drag queens. And of course it's insensitive and insulting to trans women for whom not having periods is painful and not funny. And I can't imaging women being entirely comfortable with it either. Or am I being overly sensitive? I am firmly of the belief that anything is fair game for humour, but this humour seems to missunderstand everything.
UPDATE: This comment on Jezebel sums it up better: "There are people out there who do wish they had periods, whether they are trans or infertile or going through menopause. As much as menstruating women legitimately hate their periods, being excluded from the experience is painful for some people. And it's NOT FUNNY. At all.
It's wrong to clumsily use that situation for humor, and it's definitely wrong to use it to make people who menstruate "feel better" about their periods. It's insulting to everyone involved".

Not sure what that says about me or my relationship with makeup. Is there a doctor in the house?
In a video piece called "Natural Beauty", Dutch artists Lernert and Sander apply makeup to Belgian supermodel Hannelore Knuts. Except they apply a whole year's worth of makeup.
More HERE.

You've all heard Beyonce's new song and seen the video, Run The World, right. Some of my gays were having orgasms over the video, though I was a little underwhelmed. Sure it's very expensive looking, and glossy, with some hot fashion (the mirror shoes) and some really gorgeous images (in particular I like the hyena shots - I've been meaning to blog about the hyena men in Somalia for ages. Somebody remind me later!) but, so many videos are all those things these days. It doesn't excite me like the Single Ladies clip did.
However, all that aside, the one thing about the video that did make me raise a jaded eye-brow was the fact that she's singing about gurl power, and how women run the world and it has this feminist gloss to it... and then she and all her powerful, world-running women spend half the video dancing in their bras and suspender belts! Or in cheap stripper dresses! Beyonce's women may be running the world, but only as long as they dress like whores so the men will let them.
So I was amused when I came across this Beyonce take-down from a funny, and fired-up feminist. Though as she says herself, in response to some of the comments on the YouTube page:
"This video is not about Beyonce. It's not even really about this song. My point is NOT that she shouldn't have made this song because of X, Y, and Z.
My point IS: Oh, Look! X, Y, and Z exist and this song is a great tie-in to a discussion of feminism.
If you've watched some of my other videos, you would be able to sense the sarcastic tone. Relax."

World In Sport has a fun gallery of sporting women at the turn of the last century. They seem to have particularly liked boxing!

Acid attacks on women - and even young girls - are a horrible fact of life in parts of Asia, especially Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, but also in Cambodia and other countries. The New York Times has reported from Afganistan and Pakistan, and you can read more HERE, including some very distressing photographs.
It's just impossible to comprehend.

Women. They're actually very simple creatures. You see, "deep in their hearts", all they really want is to be protected by "strong rough men". And anyway, when the choice is between a slap, and the ruination of themselves, their families, and society, well... a slap is the obvious choice.
The real problem of course is female masturbation, because it's much riskier than male masturbation. You see, their hymens are delicate, and a damaged hymen could lead to accusations of fornication, and then someone might kill her. Not that they should of course! No, a flogging would suffice.
So girls. Don't risk it. Keep your fingers above the waist... and don't watch European TV.

Italian TV is notorious for it's outrageously sexist depiction of women, where scantily clad, nubile, jiggling, and often surgically enhanced women are draped across everything from game shows to serious news programmes, and older female presenters are often pumped, plumped and stretched to compete. The situation has worsened since notoriously sexist Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi managed to gain control of the vast majority of Italian channels through his media empire.
It had seemed as if this was just accepted as perfectly normal by Italian viewers, but now one woman has objected and a serious debate has ensued.
When business woman Lorella Zanardo made a short documentary criticizing the depiction of women on TV, she had modest hopes for it - she hoped the documentary would be made available on DVD to schools and start young people thinking about the issue - but instead the documentary has become an internet sensation and national talking point.
Below is a short clip on YouTube, but you can watch the whole 30min documentary with English subtitles HERE. (Or if you're an italian speaker, without subtitles HERE)
