... we suddenly found ourselves walking toward a wall of fog coming up the river like a scene from the movie The Fog. It was particularly unusual because it seemed to stop at the Beckett Bridge and just hang there, and also clung to the river, not spreading out past the river front buildings.

And then when we got home we went to go out on the balcony only to find that a yellow summer spider had strung an amazing web right the way across the whole with of it, right across the middle. I didn't have the heart to destroy all his hard work so we've let him to it for a while.

Yesterdays flooding in all it's drama. The clip filmed inside a suddenly engulfed lift is particularly scary. Obviously my thoughts are with the families of the people who died, but also with the people whose homes were flooded. Our own Shirley Temple-Bar's house was flooded and talking to her this morning, it just sounds like it was a really horrible and depressing ordeal.

I was really sure that it was time to dig out the winter woolies when this glorious weather arrived out of nowhere. I had a lovely long walk with Veda and our respective hounds on Dollymount Strand today (giving the dune cruisers false hope! Sorry fellas).

Man In A Blizzard / Idiot With A Tripod was filmed last Saturday during New York's big blizzard, and was edited and uploaded the next day. America's most famous film critic Roger Ebert thinks it should win the Oscar for best live action short:
"(1) Because of its wonderful quality. (2) Because of its role as homage. It is directly inspired by Dziga Vertov's 1929 silent classic "Man With a Movie Camera." (3) Because it represents an almost unbelievable technical proficiency. It was filmed during the New York blizzard of Dec. 26, and Jamie Stuart e-mailed it to me with this time stamp: December 27, 2010 4:18:18 PM CST.
You can tell from the cinematography he knew exactly what he was doing and how to do it. He held the Vertov film in memory. Stuart must already been thinking of how he would do the edit and sound. Any professional will tell you the talent exhibited here is extraordinary."

I know it's real purdy right now, but I could really do without another Snowmageddon. Quite apart from the city grinding to a halt again (and it not being good for business!) I have to traipse around town doing my Christmas shopping, poor Penny is up to her chin in it, and we are beginning to worry if we'll make to to Mayo at all for Christmas.

Just as the thaw has taken hold properly, we now have to prepare for a bleedin' "polar hurricane"?! Irish Weather Online, which was really great during Snowmageddon, makes for grim reading at the moment.
"The thing that I find truly staggering is the scale of this arctic outbreak, it basically reverses the normal southwesterly flow over the North Atlantic and changes it to northeast everywhere north of about 47 deg by next Friday"
And if that's not grim enough for you, there's still the "huge polar hurricane".
