RTE radio documentary on the final Alternative Miss Ireland

Earlier today RTE1 broadcast a documentary called May The Best Queen Win about the final AMI, which followed two contestants in the build up to the event, including, fortuitously, Minnie Melange.

You can listen to it, or download it, HERE.

Is a fear of stereotypes cramping your gay style?

A gay guy talks (and mimes) about how for twenty years he denied himself the opportunity to love Barbra Streisand because he didn't want to be one of those gays. Wise words Kids. Listen up!

On another note - where do you think this guy is from? Do we have any accent experts? Clearly it's mostly North American, but there's an underlying something - like he moved to the US. At first I though there was a Northern Irish hint, but then thought English maybe. Not that it's important, but I'm nosey like that.

I Could Have Danced All Night

Michael Tierney was a local, much loved "character" in Ennis Co. Clare, where he delivered papers in make-up, flamboyant hats, jewelry and doused in perfume. He wore a collection of wigs - blonde pig-tails, or black Elvis quiffs - and proudly flaunted his eccentric effeminacy from the 1950's on.

I Could Have Danced All Night is an RTE radio documentary (listen or download HERE) about Michael, remembered by those who knew him.

"The business community protected him from teenage taunts and general society took him in as one of their own. As families began to holiday abroad from the 1960s onwards, the women of the town would often bring back 'a hat for Michael.' When he died, it was one of the largest funerals ever seen in Ennis.

The Documentary features an assortment of characters that knew Michael and recall his joie de vivre.

These include Grammy winning singer Maura O'Connell, writer and actor Mark O'Halloran, and members of his family and friends. Michael's legacy lives on, and young people in Ennis talk about how his ability to be who he was in more straitened times - has also set an example for young gay men and women in Ennis today."

    (thanks David)

    Podcasts of my radio show

You can download all of my OpenFM radio shows HERE, so you can listen to them on your iPod and bring a little gay to the long dull commute from your dreary grey housing estate, to your call centre job in a dreary grey industrial estate. You're welcome.

Last Sunday's show Brendan Courtney, writer Phillip McMahon, gay history with Tonie Walsh, the World Cup, Eurovision, David Bowie audition, music that made me gay, an unruly mouse, and other random gayness.

Sunday's show was my last show - OpenFM's temporary license is up and is now off the air. I've really enjoyed doing it though, so maybe I'll see if another station wants to up their mouthy trannie quotient. And sure why wouldn't they?!

Podcast of the Panti radio show

Some enterprising gay has put up unofficial podcasts of all the OpenFM radio shows. You can listen to my show from yesterday, HERE, in which we reviewed the Pride celebrations, talked to gay hurling star Dónal Óg Cusack, and to Trinity College geneticist Dr Kevin Mitchell about the research in to the genetics of sexual orientation.

I would also highly recommend that you listen to this documentary on the history of the Irish gay rights movement. It's called From Paisley To Panti, but don't worry, it's not about me in any way! I guess they just liked the alliterative sound of that title. Though I suspect Ian Paisley might have a different view...

All the podcasts are HERE. (Well done that enterprising gay for setting that up)

Expect a hoarse, worn out Panti, and Dónal Óg Cusack on the radio today

We'll be reviewing yesterday's Pride festivities, talking to a geneticist about current research into the genetics of homosexuality, and talking to gay hurling super-star Dónal Óg Cusack. My mother will be thrilled because she's decided Dónal is perfect for me. I'll have to break it to him gently.

OpenFM from 6 till 8pm, around dublin on your wireless, or around the world on the web.

If you need more old lady glamour in your life...

... you can listen to a podcast of my first radio show last Sunday HERE. You don't have to, it's not compulsory or anything, but you know, it's there if you want to.

Here's a pic of me and Brendan and Lisa, who are the radio professionals who have been forced to work with me.

Tune in, turn on, drop dead gorgeous

OpenFM started broadcasting today, across Dublin on 89.9fm or inside your computer HERE, and you can up the trannie quotient of your dreary life by tuning in to my show from 6 - 8pm today and every Sunday for the next five weeks.

I'm making it easy on myself for the first show by having Katherine Lynch on because that woman can talk for Europe. Shutting her up will be the real problem, but I have a handsome gay vet on as well to distract her. And Gloria the gay choir, whose annual gig in the National Concert Hall I emceed last night and as always it was a real pleasure. (Without sounding too mushy about it, Gloria is one of those few groups where the gays and the dykes really come together and create something wonderful as a community)

Anygay, if you can't take another minute of the World Cup, and your TV is broken, tune in later!
