I'm off to Australia for a month - but everything is covered

I'm heading off to Oz tomorrow (Tuesday) and I'll be gone till Dec 7th. First stop Tasmania where I'll be doing a few gigs at Tasmania Pride and then on to Brisbane, Noosa, and Sydney. Can't wait!

I will be checking in here from time to time, bringing you the odd update from down under.

However, the Dublin queens are being fantastic and covering all my regular Dublin gigs.

At The Panti Show on Saturdays in Pantibar, Bunny, Bláthnaid, Regina and Candy are going to be joined by Shirley Temple-Bar and Dolly Grip

On Thursdays, Make & Do Do will be continuing under the tutelage of Veda Beaux Reves, Dizzy Dyin'forit, and Pixie Woo.

And my Friday night F.A.G. gigs will be covered by Veda, Bunny, and Regina.

Phew! Who knew I was so busy?!

If you're feeling a little down at any time over the next month or so, just remember that I am in a bikini and having a ball while you endure enjoy November in Ireland. That should cheer you up. It cheers me up!

    Hello Tasmania!

I'm off to Australia in November, and first stop is Tasmania Pride. Can't wait!

FYI, for those of you too young (or too straight) to remember, Return To Eden is the greatest TV mini-series ever made. EVER! It was made in the early 80's as a kind-of Australian answer to the high glamour American shows of the day like Dallas and Dynasty. However, Return To Eden has the greatest set-up ever dreamt up by drunk gay writers.

It's all about Stephanie Harper (say that in an Australian accent) who is a frumpy and plain, but exceedingly wealthy heiress, who ends up marrying a suave, handsome tennis player. BUT! He is a no-good murderous schemer only after her money, and while on honeymoon in the outback he pushes poor Stephanie into a crocodile infested river and he and his evil girlfriend watch her get eaten. BUT! (there are a lot of "BUT"s in Return To Eden) Stephanie doesn't die! She only has her face eaten off. And she is found and nursed back to (disfigured) health by a hermit who also mines for precious gems. When Stephanie is ready he gives her some big diamonds he mined and she goes off and gets a new name - Tara Welles - and a new FACE from a brilliant plastic surgeon. Now she looks AMAZING and with her new name and new face she goes back to Sydney and BECOMES AN INTERNATIONAL SUPERMODEL and goes about plotting her revenge on the dastardly husband and his bitch girlfriend. And she plots to get back her fortune and her beloved family estate, Eden. (See? That's where the show's name comes from)

I was OBSESSED with it in 1983/4 and you can be too because it's all on YouTube.

(And just because I know what you people are like, poor Stephanie gets pushed to the crocodiles in this part)

    I'm back

And to be honest, I'm not particularly happy about it. Real life is too... real.

Pantibar will sail on blithely without me, Bunny will keep the drag fires burning. and Penny will spend the week with her foster gay and her boyfriend Bruno.

    Embassies and police officers

As you might imagine, it's pretty busy chez Bliss this week with Pride in full swing, but it gets me out of the house!

Yesterday I was invited to the US embassy to a screening of the documentary Stonewall Uprising and to take part in a panel discussion afterwards.

As you'd expect, security at the embassy is tight - the full airport style check - and you are not allowed bring any "electronic equipment" in with you so they take your phone. Which is a pity because I'd never been inside the US embassy before and it's pretty wonderful inside and I'd have liked to have taken some pics. In the middle of the round building is a "rotunda', a round full height space with circular balconies with brass railings rising four stories around a central "courtyard".

After some chatting, snacking and drinking, the screening took place in the rotunda with seats filling the floor space for an invited audience of members of the LGBT community representing a wide range of organisations and community groups.

Afterward I took part in a panel discussion along with Brad, the embassy man who'd organised the event, Moninne from Marriage Equality, and Siobhan, the LGBT Officer from the Union of Students in Ireland.

It was a great event, and clearly a very personal one for Brad who spoke about his own sexuality and at one stage while talking about some of the various events that have happened to mark Pride in US embassies around the world after Obama asked the embassies to engage with local gay communities, he suddenly broke down in tears and couldn't continue. It was very sweet. Though I suddenly had to jump into the breach and talk to spare him his blushes!

I had to leave pretty quickly after the discussion because I needed to get back to Pantibar for our Pride Make & Do Do, and while in the taxi on the way there, I got a text to let me know that anywhere up to a 130 European gay police officers were heading to Pantibar. Dublin is currently hosting a conference for the European Gay Police Officers Association and after a long day conferencing they needed a little glamour in their lives.

(Some of the visiting officers meeting the President and his Missus: pic Photocall Ireland)

And a jolly and attractive bunch they were. We even stayed open a smidgen late last night because I figured, what was going to happen if a Garda came along?!

However, although the Gardai and visiting police officers themselves were reluctant to discuss it, the major topic of conversation among the rest of the customers in the bar last night (after which of the policemen you'd most like to play Cops & Robbers with) was the growing controversy about the attitude of the Irish Commissioner to the wearing of the Garda uniform in tomorrow's Pride parade.

All of the delegates to the conference will be marching in the parade tomorrow in their uniforms - except the Irish officers. Apparently the Commissioner has refused permission for the Irish officers to wear their uniforms. Not even their dress uniforms (so it has nothing to do with confusing the general public, thinking they were officers on duty or whatever). Indeed, apparently the Commissioner didn't even want the visiting officers to wear their uniforms but the union caused a fuss. In the end the Irish officers were told they could wear their uniforms to visit the President in the Áras, but there was no budging on the parade issue. So, while all the visiting officers will be marching in their full and fine regalia, the Irish officers will be in their civvies.

As Catherine Tate's "Gran" would say: What a load of old shit!

Late Fragments cover 'Love Is a Battlefield' (for me!)

I contributed to the Late Fragments FundIt campaign to finance their new EP and one of the "rewards" I got was that they would do a cover of any song I chose. My choice was the Pat Benatar classic.

Slow blog warning: New York bound

You've probably noticed that things have been a bit slower than usual 'round these blog parts of late. That's because I've been a busy woman, juggling regular work, various events, and a very busy sex life. However, things are about to grind almost to a halt for the next week because I am off to New York till the 14th.

Some of you will know that I used to be part of a drag double act in Tokyo in the early/mid 90's, and my partner in trans gender crime was the lovely Lurleen. Since we got chased out of Japan by an angry mob (Kidding! They loved our brand of giant lady charm!) Lurleen has been living in New York where she will be celebrating her 50th birthday in style later this week (obviously she was the older half of the act!) and someone needs to be there to change her diapers, so I'm off to the big apple with a bag full of nappy pins and handy-wipes.

Here's a fun photo-montage clip of Lurleen and I rolling around on the floor of her Tokyo apartment on New Year's Eve 1993. Not sure if it was before or after a gig, but that's not important.

However, befor I go tomorrow morning you have a couple of last chances to see me. "Phew!" you say.

I'll be in the Civic Offices on Wood Quay this evening at 6:30 where I'll be making a brief speech at the launch of this year's Pride programme. Did I mention that I am the Grand Marshal of this year's parade. No? Well, I am. Hence he speech this evening. I believe the event is open to the public.

Then, if that's not enought (or not practical for you culchies) you can catch me later this evening on RTE 2. I'll be on the Craig Doyle Live show at 10:50 directly after the final episode of Desperate Housewives.

However, I'll leave you with this delightfully cocky Brazilian boy dancing for his own pleasure - and ours - alone in his bedroom. Isn't the internet wonderful? To think our grandparents never had the pleasure of watching random cute Brazilian boys dancing in their bedrooms on the other side of the world. Poor granny!
