The grumpy rich versus the arrogant richer

A fun Channel 4 documentary about the culture clash between the rich local residents of London's Nightsbridge and the super-rich young men from the Gulf states that arrive every summer and cruise around the streets in their "super cars". If you are into cars there's a lot of car porn here, but even if you're not - like me - it's still a fun documentary. On one side there are the easy-to-hate local residents and their casual racism, but on the other are the arrogant, extremely rich Arab boys and their anti-social and dangerous driving. It's almost impossible to pick a side, but I suppose if I really have to I'll take the arrogant hot fellas over the racism. I'm easy like that.

The best part is when the documentary maker asks a meeting of concerned residents if any of them have ever spoken to the super car drivers and they all look nonplussed and say "No". Well, that and the part where the grumpy racist gets hit with an umbrella by a boy who looks like the kid from Up.

Did Madonna spend over £600,000 on a Wallis Simpson bracelet? Looks that way.

When Madonna appeared on one of the farewell episodes of Oprah, she was wearing a diamond and gem-set cross bracelet (above) which appears to be a bracelet that was owned by Wallis Simpson, The Duchess Of Windsor, and which was recently sold at auction by Sotheby's. Madonna has of course just been directing her first feature film, W.E., based on the life of Wallis and her husband King Edward VIII, who abdicated in order to marry the American divorcee.

Although the estimate was between £350,000 and £450,000 the bracelet was eventually sold to a mystery bidder who paid £601,250 for it (sterling, so somewhere around the 1 million euro mark) - but I guess the buyer is not such a mystery anymore.

    Here's Wallis herself wearing it.

    Gays and their money

The prevailing wisdom, pushed by gay marketers looking for advertising revenue, is that gays (or at least gay men) are a relatively well off group with plenty of disposable income. But Gay Money: The Truth About Lesbian And Gay Economics argues that this view is unsupported by the data, and that the truth is that gay men earn less than their straight peers, and lesbians earn more than theirs.

It argues that the prevailing wisdom is based on unreliable data, mostly gathered from gay couples who are easier to identify in surveys.

    And as for why?

Why do gay males have generally lower incomes than straight males?

    * Gay males have more education than straight males, but they do not choose male-dominated professions as often as straight males do. In fact, they choose female-dominated and/or service professions much more often. Male-dominated professions (like construction) have generally higher wages than female-dominated professions (like secretarial).

    * Gay males work fewer hours than straight males.

Why do lesbians generally have higher income than straight females?
It's almost the inverse of the gay-male trend.

    * Lesbians also have more education than straight females, but they work longer hours - because, generally speaking, they are less likely to have children to take care of at home.

    * Lesbians are overrepresented in male-dominated professions that pay better than female-dominated professions.

    That's a big house

In fact, it's the biggest house in the world.

India's richest man, and the fourth richest man in the world, Mukesh Ambani, who is worth an estimated £18 billion sterling, has just moved in to this twenty seven story house in Mumbai with his wife and three children.

It has a health club, a gym and dance studio, a ballroom, a 50 seater cinema, an elevated garden with ceiling space to accommodate small trees, three helicopter pads on the roof, and there is also underground parking for 160 cars, and spectacular views of Mumbai and of the Arabian Sea. Oh, and 600 staff.

It's 37,000 square metres, which is more than the Palace of Versailles.

I can't believe there isn't a wig room. Useless house.

Box of old photographs bought for $45 turn out to be by Ansel Adams, worth $200 million

64 year old Rick Norsigian was rummaging around a garage sale ten years ago when he came across two old boxes of glass photographic negatives, some of which he recognised as being of Yosemite Park, where he'd worked as a young man. He bargained the seller down from $70 to $45, took them home, and shoved them under his bed.

Two years later, he realised they may be by pioneering nature photographer Ansel Adams, whose iconic photographs of Yosemite Park are part of the American conscious. Two years later, after doing some research he realised that they may be valuable and moved them to a bank vault.

Now, the collection of early Ansel Adams photographs has been valued at $200 million.

    Ahhh... Now I understand!

Despite appearances, I am not an economist, so I've been having trouble getting my head around the whole financial crisis thingamajig. I read one economist explain it all (We're all fu%ked!) and think I understand, and then the next day I read a different economist explain it all (We'll be fine!) and I start to doubt the first guy (Well, they are all guys...) and then I'm just as confused as I was before I read anything.

Until now. Finally, these two Australian blokes have explained everything. It's simple really.

    Picasso is top dog again

What recession? Picasso has taken the top spot again, as this painting sets a new record for the highest price achieved at auction: $106.5 million dollars. Which is grand an' all, and yet nobody has bought me my off-the-rack-and-not-all-that-expensive-at-all-really Alexander McQueen dress yet. What's that about?

If outrageous displays of ostentatious wealth offend you, look away now

38 year old Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko got Phillipe Starck to design him a $300 million yacht and it is pretty jaw-dropping.
