This version of Like A Virgin that Madge is doing on the MDNA tour (this was filmed in Berlin) is dividing the Madonna tribe. People seem to either hate it because the song is almost unrecognisable with every hint of it's fun, pop origins stripped away, while others love it for exactly that reason. All the Gaga fans online are slating it because they think she sounds terrible - though that seems to me to entirely miss the point. Sure she doesn't sound like Maria Callas, but that's hardly the intent of this intense, vaguely Germanic/Dietrich performance. Around the 3:15 mark she breaks down crying (or she's been getting acting lessons again... argue among yourselves), and later she gets winched into a corset - and as a woman who is regularly winched into a corset, I feel her pain.

... because they've handed her the best publicity she's had in years. Even if you go along with the 'it-proves-shes-a-monster' school of thought - which I don't - it has all the gays talking about her all this week, and when you are Madonna they're the only people that really count.
Madonna's longtime spokesperson Liz Rosenberg is the best in the business and her response to the flower kerfuffe earlier in the week was perfect:
"She's entitled to like any flower she wants and she didn't want to hurt the feelings of the hydrangeas of the world...No disrespect to the hydrangea lovers of the world, but she prefers different types of flowers."
In other words, "Fuck off" but said with humour.
But now Madonna, in a lighthearted moment - which you don't get from her much these days - has responded herself.

Because so far the reviews of W.E. which had it's first screening at the Venice Film Festival have been very mixed depending on who you are reading. Some are reasonably positive, others are on the fence, and then others are oh-my-feckin'-good-Jaysus viciously dreadful.
Though whether they were liking it or hating it, they definitely weren't ignoring her and she was the centre of attention at the film festival.

Many people have wondered why Madonna, who is a major figure in Malawi and has a large charity there, hadn't spoken out about the trial of the Malawi gay couple. In fairness to her, it may have been because she felt her speaking out publicly may have harmed their case - after all, Westerners are seen introducing homosexuality and other "vices".
However, now that they have been sentenced to 14 years hard labour, she has decided to speak up:
"I am shocked and saddened by the decision made today by the Malawian court, which sentenced two innocent men to prison.
"As a matter of principle, I believe in equal rights for all people, no matter what their gender, race, color, religion, or sexual orientation.
"Today, Malawi took a giant step backward. The world is filled with pain and suffering; therefore, we must support our basic human right to love and be loved.
"I call upon the progressive men and women of Malawi-and around the world-to challenge this decision in the name of human dignity and equal rights for all."

The new issue of Interview magazine has an interview with Madonna by Gus Van Sant, in which, among other things, she talks about the influence gay men have had on her life, and the impact the AIDS epidemic had on her early years in New York.
In fact, the character that Richard E. Grant plays in the film I directed, Filth and Wisdom [2008], is this blind professor who was based on my ballet teacher, Christopher Flynn. Growing up in Michigan, I didn't really know what a gay man was. He was the first man-the first human being-who made me feel good about myself and special. He was the first person who told me that I was beautiful or that I had something to offer the world, and he encouraged me to believe in my dreams, to go to New York. He was such an important person in my life. He died of AIDS, but he went blind toward the end of his life. He was such a lover of art, classical music, literature, opera. You know, I grew up in the Midwest, and it was really because of him that I was exposed to so many of those things. He brought me to my first gay club-it was this club in Detroit.
I always felt like I was a freak when I was growing up and that there was something wrong with me because I couldn't fit in anywhere. But when he took me to that club, he brought me to a place where I finally felt at home. So that character in Filth and Wisdom was dedicated to him and inspired by him.
I don't know why I'm bringing all this up, but I guess it's just coming from that world in Michigan and the trajectory of my life: after going to New York and being a dancer when the whole AIDS epidemic started and nobody knew what it was. And then suddenly, all these beautiful men around me, people who I loved so dearly, were dying-just one after the next. It was just such a crazy time. And watching the world freak out-the gay community was so ostracized. But it was also when I was beginning my career. . . . I don't know. Your movie really struck a chord for me and made me remember all that. It's a time I don't think many people have captured on film. It's a time that people don't talk about much. And even though there was so much death, for me, New York was so alive.
The interview is accompanied by a great photo set that is very reminiscent of her first album cover shoot.

Feels Like Home by Meck was a club hit a couple of years ago, and then Madonna took it and mashed it up with Like A Prayer on her Sticky & Sweet tour. Now, seeing an opportunity, Meck have gotten a Madonna sound-alike to sing it and released the mash-up as a single. To the casual listener, it is Madonna.

This probably won't last too long on YouTube so if you want to see it, be quick. But if you're too slow, don't worry, cos it's pretty weak. Very weak actually. Though Madonna looks amazing.
