If any more proof were needed that once respected columnist (that seems like a long time ago now) Kevin Meyers has ossified into a parody of an angry, impotent, reactionary old man, nurturing and clinging on to his sad prejudices, blind to anything that challenges them, then this column about immigration should put any lingering doubts to rest. I always picture him like Gollum now, scurring out from under his rock, spitting his venom and then scurrying back under his rock, frightened by the world around him. And like Gollum, I suspect that part of the reason he's become so, is because people just don't like him. He's such a pompous ass.
There is so much wrong with this article from today's Independent, (I won't insult your intelligence by going through it) but what strikes me most is the implied assumption that nobody thinks immigration is a good thing. His assumption that we're all horrified when we see what immigration has done to the East End of London. He's warning us! Though the only terrible consequence he comes up with is the laughable assertion that young white boys don't have enough role models!
Kevin must be so proud of himself though, because the BNP are now his biggest fans. I won't link you to it because I'd feel guilty - and anyway they mostly just reprint Kevin's pearls of intolerance - but I've taken a screen grab so you won't think I'm making stuff up. I'd never do that, me.
You do have to wonder why the Indo still print his tired old ravings. I know the argument is that this kind of rubbish drives sales (and here I am linking to the Indo) but does it really? I long ago stopped buying it even occasionally because of this kind of stuff. Well, that and it's 'tabloidisation' - all those dreary, boring pictures of non-celebrities and 'models' advertising whatever in Stephen's Green. But of course, as people are always pointing out, I'm weird.

(thanks John)

Two days ago he walked in to a fitness class in a gym in Pittsburgh, pulled out two guns, and started shooting. Four women died and ten were injured.
But for over a year beforehand he kept a web-log where he recorded his thoughts on what he was about to do, why he was doing it (loneliness mostly - no girlfriend, no sex, no close family relationships), how he would do it, and why he wanted people to read about it. He also explains why he postponed it (to see if Obama would get elected), and how he "chickened out" on his first attempt. And all this sandwiched in between gripes about work.
It's fascinating, and mundane - an illustration of "the banality of evil".
I took off today, Monday, and tomorrow to practice my routine and make sure it is well polished. I need to work out every detail, there is only one shot. Also I need to be completely immersed into something before I can be successful. I haven't had a drink since Friday at about 2:30. Total effort needed. Tomorrow is the big day.
Unfortunately I talked to my neighbor today, who is very positive and upbeat. I need to remain focused and absorbed COMPLETELY. Last time I tried this, in January, I chickened out. Lets see how this new approach works.
