Singer-songwriter-musician David Turpin whose music has featured on the blog before, is performing a special concert called We Belong Dead at the Project Arts Centre on Wednesday September 19 at 9.30pm, as part of the ABSOLUT Fringe festival. It's billed as "a Ritual Extravaganza of Sinister Glamour" and will feature some special guests including Cathy Davey and Hunter-Gatherer performing a series of songs about the end of life as we know it and the revenge of the animal kingdom.
David says, "It's my first and only Irish show this year, and I'm hoping it will be a bit of a spectacular."
David will also have a new album out next year, and the first single from it will be the "shamelessly homoerotic" The Hotel - listen HERE.
More info and tickets for the Fringe performance from the festival website HERE.
And here's an older track, taken from his 2009 album Haunted.

I went to see The Year Of Magical Wanking in the Project Arts Centre as part of the Fringe Festival last night. Written and starring Neil Watkins (whose drag character Heidi Konnt is an ex Alternative Miss Ireland) and produced and directed by my own erstwhile collaborator thisispopbaby it is a searingly honest, intense, darkly funny, and raw piece.
Word of mouth has been very strong and it was a packed house last night. It runs untill Saturday and I highly recommend it, but I suggest you be quick if you want a ticket. And don't just take my word for it. Here's what the Irish Times had to say about it. And here's what the Irish Theatre Magazine had to say about it.

Dublin's Absolut Fringe festival runs from Sept 10th - 25th.
You can see the full programme, get all the details and book tickets online HERE, or you can book tickets by phone 1850 374 643, or if you are in Temple Bar, in person at the box office in Filmbase on Curved Street.

On our walk today Penny and I had a look at artist Fergal MacCarthy on his little "tropical" island floating in the Liffey. No Man's Land is an installation as part of the Fringe Festival and he will be living on the island for the next week, dressed in his "developers" suit and surrounded by the gleaming glass and steel products of the Celtic Tiger - and of course only yards downstream from the hulking decaying shell of the doomed Anglo Irish headquarters.
MacCarthy is the same guy who floated the giant Monopoly houses in the river during last year's Fringe.
The weather was a little blustery and changeable today, but nice enough, however with this storm heading our way tonight, rather him than me.
You can follow his tweets from his island HERE, and follow the whole project on his blog HERE.

I saw The Year Of Magical Wanking during it's stand-alone run at The Project Arts Centre earlier in the year and it's an intense, raw, thoughtful, no-holds-barred piece. But don't take my word for it. Here's waht the Irish Theatre Magazine had to say about it.

The Absolut Fringe festival has just kicked off, and Pantibar's basement is the venue for one of the shows again this year.

True Enough! The Interactive Post-Fact Game Show With Real Cash Prizes
Making Strange theatre company.
Let's face it: we live in a post-fact society, where what matters isn't so much what's true but what we FEEL is true. Science facts under attack, political yelling instead of debate-how do we, the rational, compete on this new playing field? True Enough! The Interactive Post-Fact Game Show With Real Cash Prizes is designed to teach you how to cope in the changing landscape of truth. Our hosts guide you through a panoply of topics and activities- different every night testing your ability to adapt to the new reality. Everyone gets to play; everyone can win that real cash! Winner of The Performance Corporation's SPACE Production Award. Making Strange are part of Project Catalyst, an initiative of Project Arts Centre.
"Megan Riordan returns to ABSOLUT Fringe after travelling the world with her 2008 hit ‘Luck'. This new show is an even more tantalizing proposition than her last. I can't think of a better game show host to spend an hour with". Róise Goan, Director, ABSOLUT Fringe
The show runs every day at 6:30 from Sept 17th till the 25th. Tickets HERE.
