Tomorrow night in the O'Reilly Theatre at Belvedere College off Parnell Square, the Irish members of the international LGBT marching band association will be joined by members from the USA (and Brazil) for a free concert. The "massed" band have just come from London where they played at World Pride. The concert starts at 8pm, is totally free, and all are welcome. And I'll be on hand to MC proceedings (and find the Brazilian fella)
I know the musicians would really appreciate your support.

One of the best things about Irish country towns is the riot of colour. Streets of terraced houses and shops each painted a different, often garish colour. Colours that individually might be tacky and cheap looking (and indeed I suspect they might often have been chosen based on what was the cheapest colour on offer in the local hardware shop) the kind of colours a child would pick, but seen together, the effect is joyful and charming and delightful. And with our grey weather, we need the colourful lift.

So I've often worried that as we got wealthier, and our tastes became more "sophisticated" as we all watched home and garden design shows on the telly, that we might see a creeping "tasteful" greying of Irish towns, and our fun, vibrant, gaudy pallets replaced by an inoffensive blandness of middle class beige and taupe. But while there has definitely been a bit of that - you definitely see less electric yellow and "kelly" green - thankfully our love of brash colour seems to be more deeply embedded than Wallpaper Magazine.
And we're not alone. In fact, we seem to be ahead of the curve if these two separate stories are anything to go by.

Two Dutch artists went to the favelas of Brazil to film an MTV documentary about hip-hop music, but when the filming was finished they decided to stay and started an organisation called Favela Painting, dedicated to "bringing outrageous art to unexpected places". One of their most ambitious projects is to paint one of Rio's favelas in uplifting bright colour with the help of local youth, and the results so far are gorgeous.

This is the design for what they hope to achieve.

Separately, the Lets Colour Project is is "a worldwide initiative to transform grey spaces with vibrant colour. A mission to spread colour all over the world" that is working with local communities across the globe.
This short video of the project's work was shot by award winning director Adam Berg over four weeks in Brazil, France, London and India. The locations are real and remain transformed and the people are from the local communities.

Are you 18 - 22 and gay, lesbian, bi, or transgender? Well in that case, you're wanted. Well, you and your straight bestie.
A team of film makers are making three short documentaries about the alliances forged between LGBT young people and their straight mates. The project is in conjunction with Belong To, the wonderful gay youth organisation, and is being produced by award winning film maker Mark O'Halloran (Garage, Adam & Paul, Prosperity) so it's a project with credentials!
They're looking for about twenty five pairs, so if you'd like to take part, you'll need your straight best friend with you and be happy to talk about your sexuality and friendship. The interview will only take a couple of hours, and will be filmed in March.
If you're interested, or know anyone who is, contact the team at: lgbtdocumentary@gmail.com and they'll be happy to fill you in on the details.

And are you a big gay/dyke/trannie or some other such miscreant? Then perhaps you'd like to help a young Trinity College student who contacted me and asked me to help her find people to interview for her thesis. Her name is Shannon Bell, which I think is why I decided to help her. Shannon Bell. Good drag name!
My name is Shannon Bell and I am currently a Master's student at Trinity College studying education. In the upcoming school year (09-10) I will be working on a project setting out to investigate the experiences of LGBT individuals in Further Education in the Republic of Ireland. I will be working under the supervision of Dr. Stephen Minton for this project.
I intend to explore issues such as inclusive language, anti-bullying policies, availability of support resources, visibility, bullying, and a few others and how these issues affect student and staff perspectives about acceptance and inclusion of this minority population into the school environment. I plan to obtain this information through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 10-12 participants who have attended or are currently attending further education institutions in the Republic of Ireland.
If you think you might like to help her out, you can contact here at shannon.e.bell@gmail.com

Then you might be interested in BeLonG To, the really great gay youth group. I've done a couple of things with them over the last few years and I've always been really impressed with the gay kids. We did a drag workshop once which was a blast.
Here's the lovely Michael (he's dreamy!) from BeLonG To. He'll explain what they're all about.
And here's their website.
Now get back to those books! The Leaving Cert isn't going to pass itself!
