The track on the clip is one of my favourite pop songs, a 70's hit called 'Substitute' by South African all-girl group Clout.
"Substitute" was a cover version of an obscure
Righteous Brothers' song, composed by Willie Wilson. Clout's version
reached number two in the UK singles chart for three weeks in June
1978, and number one in New Zealand, Australia, Germany, France,
Belgium, the Netherlands, and South Africa. It reached only number
sixty-seven in the U.S. for one week in September 1978, but stayed in
the Billboard chart for ten weeks altogether. "Substitute" was then
recorded by Gloria Gaynor for single release in the U.S., but radio and
club D.J.s preferred the B side which became the worldwide hit: "I Will
Survive".
Here's Clout on Top Of The Pops.
Their other big hit was a song called Save Me, which I love too.
Their version is a cover, of Petula Clarke's version in French, called
(obviously enough) Sauve Moi. If you like that sort of thing, you can
check out both of them on YouTube.
Gotta love Petula's voice, which is even more lovley in French!
