GAZE film festival has a new sponsor

It not easy to secure major sponsorship in the current climate so it's great news that GAZE, Dublin's internbational gay and lesbian film festival which is now in it's 20th year, has secured major and ongoing sponsorship with Accenture.

This year's festival runs Aug 2nd - 6th in the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield. Keep an eye on the website for details.

Accenture is to sponsor this year's 20th Dublin International LGBT Film Festival, GAZE, a cinematic showcase of Irish and International LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) film. Alongside its new ‘Straight Allies' programme - a network of straight and LGBT employees dedicated to supporting the company's LGBT population - Accenture is supporting the festival to show its commitment to the LGBT population internally and externally.

Country Managing Director, Accenture Ireland Mark Ryan said, "Ensuring an inclusive environment for our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees is a key and integral part of Accenture's inclusion and diversity strategy. The Straight Allies programme is an initiative created by straight and LGBT Accenture staff to proactively support an inclusive work environment, one in which every person feels valued regardless of their sexual orientation. While Straight Allies is a company initiative, we wanted to be proactive in our support of the wider LGBT community in Ireland and the GAZE festival gives us the opportunity to do this."

Noel Sutton, GAZE Festival Producer said, "We couldn't be more excited with this year's Gaze festival, especially with the sponsorship from Accenture. Such a collaboration secures the on-going success of our festival which is a main highlight in the LGBT calendar. One of the key features of GAZE is the ability the festival has to create a social context for cinema lovers to mingle, discuss the programme, and generally have a good time in such a great space that we have in the Lighthouse Cinema. This year, celebrating our 20th year, we're hoping to build on our reputation as a festival that is not only cerebral, creative and thought-provoking, but also great fun."

Anyone know anything about this new object on the Docklands south quays?

It's like a giant biscuit tin.

Anyone know who the artist is? And is it pure sculpture or is it disguising a practical object, like the mirrored gas thing on the opposite quay?

    Emilio & Orlando

If you've spent any time in Dublin gay clubs over the past year or so you'll know identical twin Venezuelan dancers Emilio and Orlando - at least to see! They're hard to miss. Check them out in this sweet clip.

Yey! I have a 70% chance of having a baby with good skin!

According to the latest census figures, I live in the area of Dublin with the highest prportion of immigrants in Ireland - 70% of the population of the electoral district around the G.P.O. were born outside Ireland. Which is why I'm always so busy - somebody's got to lay out the welcome tranny-mat!

    The unbearable lightness of being

When I was 17 years old I was already a ditzy queen and turned up on the wrong day to register at art college. And so instead of registering with a big group of other excited and nervous teenagers about to start college together, I found myself surrounded by all the older students who were returning to college for another year, and who were all greeting each other loudly after the summer holidays and knew exactly where they were and what they were doing. I felt awkward and shy. And when I found the right queue and sat down, I found myself beside an impossibly handsome punk with a bleached-blonde mohawk and wearing a pair of pyjamas with a Playboy centre-fold safety-pinned to the back. He was so exotic and handsome I could barely breath, and as far as I was concerned he was living proof that I'd made the right decision to go to art college.

It turned out that the punk's name was Tony and he was a year ahead of me studying film. He was a wild, entertaining guy, and over the years I slowly got to know him. Though it wasn't untill long after college that I got to know him better. He was a "head around town" that I'd often bump in to, and sometimes our paths would cross at film-y type things. He lost his punk styling and wild ways over the years but he never lost his handsomeness. About ten years ago he took up running, and as I was running marathons at the time, we would often chat about our mutual love of a long run. And in recent years Penny and I would often meet him when we were on our regular walks by Grand Canal Dock where he was living. He was one of those people who always seemed to be part of the background of my life, and someone I have always had great affection for ever since his punkish beauty took my breath away when I was a shy and nervous teenager.

Tony passed away in his sleep earlier this week. No one knows why.

Regular readers will know I love tilt-shift films. Here's one Tony shot of Grand Canal Dock.
