08 Aug 2009

This blog is one year old today. I made my first post on the 8th of August last year, and one year and 1,314 posts later, it’s still going.
It’s been fun – but time consuming! When I started I didn’t realse how time consuming it would become, but as more people started to read it, it became a vague pressure to post regularly. I feel a weird responsibility to the people who read it regularly, and start to feel guilty if I haven’t posted anything, even for one day. I started it just as a way to give the Pantibar site some life and interactivity, but it has taken on a life of it’s own, beyond it’s original purpose.
I guess the first time I realised that was when I posted an angry rant about the poor turn out for the marriage equality rally. The response to that post really surprised me, which I first became aware of from the huge number of comments that were left. Then I satrted to see the post being reproduced on other sites, and in the end, I think that post seemed to help light a fire under the campaign for marriage equality in this country that is still burning. That was not at all what I was expecting when I wrote it and I realised that the blog was suddenly more than I had anticipated it to be.
In some ways, it’s taken over my life! Whenever I see something interesting, or discover something new, I immediately think, “I must blog that”. Sometimes my friends will tell me stuff, and than say, “Don’t blog that!”
But it’s helped me too. I’ve found that writing for the blog can crystalise my thoughts, and then those things seep into my other work. My new stage show, for example, definitely benefited from things I’d written about on the blog.
It’s encouraged me to take more photographs too, which I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed. Walking with Penny has become an on-going photography project. They may not be very good, taken with my phone, but I have fun taking them.
And I’ve benefited from the interaction with you, the readers. I enjoy the comments, and the instant gratification that comes from reading responses to something you’ve just written or posted. And I enjoy all the stuff you send me – keep them coming. I’ve learnt a few things!
The number of visitors has been growing steadily over the year. The first month there were only a few people reading it, but last month...
There were 31,000 visits
From just over 11,000 visitors
Single day visitors varied from 653 to 3015

USA 2,968 visitors
UK 2,777 visitors

The most popular post last month was this one. (which was linked to by a few sites in the US)
