Lorem Ipsum Page 1 of 493 1 \| 2 \| 3 \| 4 \| 5 » 24 Jan 2013 Complaint against Meteor ad upheld by Advertising Standards Authority The ASAI has upheld the complaint against that Meteor ad made by TENI (Transgender Equality Network Ireland). The advertisement caused widespread offence in the transgendered community and the ASAI upheld two complaints of its voluntary code. The first states that advertisements should not cause offence on several grounds including sexual orientation. The second states that such groups should not be subject to "ridicule or offensive humour". Lots of people thought TENI were being overly sensitive - even I thought they were a little at first till I read a few opinions from trans bloggers/writers - but if you are in any doubt, just reading the comments under the Irish Times report will convince you they were right. Some of the comments make for depressing reading - there's a lot of ignorance out there. ads \| trans Blog Posted By Sam Lyons 25 Jan 2013 19:54 I have to agree. When I saw the ad at first I thought it was clever although something didnt feel right. It was playing the older stereo types that TBH I am sick of and create the ignorance and prejudices that are the battle field of LGBT. Posted By Vera 24 Jan 2013 19:52 Some of the comments under the article really make me wonder if the Trans community are doing themselves a disservice by relating themselves to the gay community. People will always confuse transexuals with transvestites unless transexuals establish themselves as a mental and physical issue rather than one of sexuality. Also in terms of the degree to which progress has been made I think that trans people are much further outside the mainstream than gays and lesbians. It's a difficult one though becuase obviously I totally identify with their struggle as it is a similar one. I just wonder if they need to establish the differences more clearly so that more people understand and empathise and not claim ignorance.
