Will Gay Marriage Destroy The World?

The opponents of gay marriage always insist it will. Civilization will be undermined, the social fabric will be torn apart, children will be raped in their beds, the sky will fall down. Gay marriage, they say, is a wild and radical social experiment and the awful consequences will too horrible to contemplate. But the frustrating thing is that people accept this as a rational viewpoint (whether they agree with it or not) because there is no way of proving it to be total bunk.

Mmmmmh.... If only there was some way to prove that these people are absurd scare-mongers, driven by their own fears and prejudices. If only there was some magical place that already had gay marriage that we could look at and see whether or not the sky had indeed fallen down or not.

    Wait a minute!

    SWEDEN before gay marriage...

    SWEDEN after gay marriage....

KIDDING! Here's Sweden after gay marriage...

    Looks fine to me!

But maybe Sweden was lucky. How about Spain?

    SPAIN before gay marriage...

And here's Spain after gay marriage was introduced...

OK.... But what about South Africa? Surely South Africa was destroyed by gay marriage.

    SOUTH AFRICA before gay marriage...

And after gay marriage was introduced?

Wow! They all look fine! And after extensive research I can tell you that you get similar results for Canada, The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, and the US states that have gay marriage. Amazing!

Somebody get Brenda Power a ticket to Belgium. Preferably one-way...

Very true. Bertrand Russell once came up with a brilliant aphorism about people like that, ``Some people would rather die than think. In fact, they do.''

I hate it when bigot's assume their opinion is fact and don't bother look at research (via wikip): The amici curiae brief of the American Psychological Association, American Psychiatric Association, and National Association of Social Workers in support of the parties challenging the marriage exclusion (filled in September 2007) states: “ The scientific research that has directly compared outcomes for children with gay and lesbian parents with outcomes for children with heterosexual parents has been remarkably consistent in showing that lesbian and gay parents are every bit as fit and capable as heterosexual parents, and their children are as psychologically healthy and well-adjusted as children reared by heterosexual parents. Amici emphasize that the abilities of gay and lesbian persons as parents and the positive outcomes for their children are not areas where credible scientific researchers disagree. Statements by the leading associations of experts in this area reflect professional consensus that children raised by lesbian or gay parents do not differ in any important respects from those raised by heterosexual parents. No credible empirical research suggests otherwise. It is the quality of parenting that predicts children’s psychological and social adjustment, not the parents’ sexual orientation or gender.” Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Parented Families - A Literature Review prepared for The Australian Psychological Society states (published in August 2007): “As detailed in this review, the family studies literature indicates that it is family processes (such as the quality of parenting and relationships within the family) that contribute to determining children’s wellbeing and ‘outcomes’, rather than family structures, per se, such as the number, gender, sexuality and co-habitation status of parents. The research indicates that parenting practices and children’s outcomes in families parented by lesbian and gay parents are likely to be at least as favourable as those in families of heterosexual parents, despite the reality that considerable legal discrimination and inequity remain significant challenges for these families."[115] ” The special article The Effects of Marriage, Civil Union, and Domestic Partnership Laws on the Health and Well-being of Children states in Pediatrics (published in July 2006): “There is ample evidence to show that children raised by same-gender parents fare as well as those raised by heterosexual parents. More than 25 years of research have documented that there is no relationship between parents' sexual orientation and any measure of a child's emotional, psychosocial, and behavioral adjustment. These data have demonstrated no risk to children as a result of growing up in a family with 1 or more gay parents. Conscientious and nurturing adults, whether they are men or women, heterosexual or homosexual, can be excellent parents. The rights, benefits, and protections of civil marriage can further strengthen these families."[116] ” Mainstream professional organizations with expertise in child welfare have issued reports and resolutions in support of gay and lesbian parental rights[117] including the the American Psychiatric Association, the National Association of Social Workers, Child Welfare League of America, the American Bar Association, the North American Council on Adoptable Children, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychoanalytic Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, Royal College of Psychiatrists[118], and Canadian Psychological Association[119]. The American Psychological Association supports adoption and parenting by same-sex couples, citing social prejudice as harming the psychological health of lesbians and gays while noting there is no empiric evidence that their parenting causes harm.[120][121][122] The American Medical Association has issued a similar position supporting same-sex adoption, stating that while there is little evidence against LGBT parenting, lack of formal recognition can cause health-care disparities for children of same-sex parents.[123]
