Like a lot of my kind, I have a weakness for outraegous, fabulous nuts. And one of the nuttiest, and most fabulous, was Welsh singer Dorothy Squires. I was vaguely familiar with her as a child, probably from Royal Variety performances or their ilk, but it was the magic of YouTube that really turned me on to her a year or two ago.
Born in 1915, her career really blossomed in the 40's, after the war, and she continued to have hits through the fifties. In 1953 she married Roger Moore, who was twelve years younger than her, but he left her for another woman in the early 60's.
In the late 60's she had a bit of a career revival, with three top thirty singles, successful tours, and a famous and celebrated run at the London Palladium. One of those singles was her cover of 'My Way', and it's her totally over the top, nutty performance of that song on YouTube, that alerted me to her awesomeness.
She seemed to get more and more batty as she got older. She became notorious for her litigiousness, even sueing actor Kenneth More for libel, after he mistakenly referred to Roger Moore's girlfriend (the one he left her for) as Roger's wife. She became so litigious in fact, that she was banned from the High Court in the early 80's, and lost much of her fortune on court proceedings. Eventually she was declared a 'vexatious litigant', meaning that she was no longer allowed to start any legal proceedings without the permission of the court.
Eventually, she lost all her money, and even her home, and was declared bankrupt. She died of lung cancer at the age of 83, after spending her final years in a home that was given to her by a fan.
Here's "Dot" at her nutty best, singing her version of My Way. Enjoy!
