The Independent sinks to a new barrel-scraping, mind-bogglingly ignorant low

This editorial appeared in the Independent today - or at least it did online - and quickly started to blow up on Facebook because of it's jaw-dropping ignorance and naked bigotry. I am up to my eyes in AMI stuff so I don't have time to lead you through it by the hand but I'm sure my readers don't need any help seeing through this unbelievable tripe. Take you pick about which part boils your righteous blood most - the gay marriage bit, the adoption bit, the abortion bit... - though my head nearly exploded by the time I got to the AIDS comments. I had to check this wasn't being written in 1986. And it's so lilly-livered on top of everything else. "I'm not expressing an opinion I'm just asking a question". Oh please!

And no author is credited. It's editorial.

UPDATE: Apparently it is credited to Kevin Meyers in the print edition. If I had known that all along I wouldn't have cared so much because no one pays that blowhard a blind bit of attention.

Anyway, very quickly the article disappeared and was replaced with a "404, page not found". Normally the Indo revel in their headline grabbing incediary opinions so I don't know if it's gone because of a glitch or by design, but I did wonder if it might get pulled so just in case I saved it. This is the kind of ignorance that needs to be exposed to the light of day.

Every week, pretty much, Kevin Myers writes an article that sparks outraged indignation across that portion of the internet that knows who Kevin Myers is. Directed by links on Twitter or Facebook, hundreds of people flock to the Irish Independent website to read the piece and see for themselves what all the fuss is about. This, of course, is one of the reasons why the Irish Independent continues to publish the increasingly mad ramblings of the man Myers: they know he kicks up stinks, and they know that stinks are good for their bottom line. More hits means more money extracted from advertisers. So: this site will reproduce Myers’s article every week, as soon as it is available on the Irish Independent website. The hope is that people will come here if and when they wish to read and comment on his terrible columns, rather than going to independent.ie and further filling the coffers of INM. The correct course of action may well be to simply ignore Myers, but on those occasions when that is impossible, you can amuse/enrage yourself with his textular nonsense here.

Can I just point out that on 21 September 2010 Myers penned a similar diatribe; except on that occasion cited 400,000 people had died from AIDS as a direct consequence of the liberalisation of the ban on same sex relations in the USA. So I guess that only leaves one real question - Have 150,000 people come back to life or does Kevin Myers just make stuff up?

I don't think people should be prevented from speaking simply because their ideas are offensive, or even it they amount to an incitement to hatred. With that said, people are perfectly entitled to boycott his newspaper and voice their disgust at his comments.

Right, if people want to complain to the proper channels, Follow this link, I explain how to complain to the Press Ombudsman. I don't have much hope, but please, if more people could do it the better.

Incitement to hatred is a bit ridiculous. Maybe complain under the "grave offense" part.

I agree with him on the abortion thing though - to kill an unborn innocent baby just because it's a female is really too awful to contemplate. Sisters be careful what you wish for....

Why isn't Kevin Meyers dead yet?

    • Posted By Sensible Stu 14 Mar 2012 15:47

Let's not forget that this is the same Kevin Myers upon whose defection from the Times to the Independent it was commented that "the quality of both newspapers has just improved" :P

Kevin Myers, wife beating paedophile with a little dick? I'm not saying he is one, I'm just asking the question!

    • Posted By Rory 14 Mar 2012 15:20

I can confirm this appears in the print edition of the Irish Independent today, and is on page 14. It's attributed to Kevin Myers. It even has a photo of him next to it. I complained to the 'appropriate authorities' (the press council/ombudsman) when the Indo published a previous "gay marriages are unnatural" piece and they don't think that goes against causing offense. I doubt you'll get a different answer out of them for this.

@JJ the thing is this doesn't even sound like Myers??? I wouldn't be suprised if someone else had written this.

    • Posted By Xnthony 14 Mar 2012 14:32

The HIV/AIDS comment is possibly the most.......just - makes me feel dumbfounded. Can't really believe what I am reading.

    • Posted By Stewart Curry 14 Mar 2012 13:58

People do have a right to an opinion, what they don't have is a right to be published. Much like Newt Gingrich and his Slut remarks, hitting the Independent in the wallet by talking to their advertisers might be worth looking at.

    • Posted By Mark 14 Mar 2012 13:43

@ Nixter . People like you come out of the wood work every time hate speech against gays is spewed out. Nobody would disagree that one of the great rights in a free country is to allow stupid people look stupid by giving them free speech. But, as Una has point out, free speech comes with responsibility. And it does have boundaries. And these boundaries have been internationally agreed. In my opinion, Myers have stepped over them here. Shocking, inciteful stuff!

    • Posted By Una Mullally 14 Mar 2012 13:24

@Nixter: the Office of the Press Ombudsman / Press Council of Ireland would disagree with you on that one. Code of Practice: Principle 8 − Prejudice: "Newspapers and magazines shall not publish material intended or likely to cause grave offence or stir up hatred against an individual or group on the basis of their race, religion, nationality, colour, ethnic origin, membership of the travelling community, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, illness or age."

    • Posted By Nixter 14 Mar 2012 13:17

I believe everyone should have the right to their opinion, no matter how repugnant it is. Silencing, or attempting to silence a dissenting opinion that goes against the grain is extremely disingenuous and hypocritical.

    • Posted By JJ 14 Mar 2012 13:00

This is a new low for Kevin Myers, if it is him, which I presume it is. And it probably don't even have to mention that that's saying something.

    • Posted By Incensed 14 Mar 2012 12:42

I read it this morning and went apoplectic. I was staggered by the ignorance of the AIDS comment. Just stunned. The "article" (although I don't think it deserves the moniker) was, I believe, a clear example of an "incitement to hatred". I would urge anyone who read it to complain to the appropriate authorities. They went too far.
