Is America ready for a gay president? Not on your nellie man-bag.

Former president Jimmy Carter recently remarked that he thought that America would soon be ready for a gay president, and The New York Times has a piece wondering if he's right. However, he's definitely wrong, and The New York Times only needed to look at their own style pages to know it - where they ran a whole piece about the dilemma the American male faces when carrying his iPad: how to carry it without looking like a gay!

American culture has some weird hang-ups about masculinity (that I'm sure some cultural commentator can trace back to the Wild West/frontier spirit or something) and from a European perspective, their hang-up about men carrying bags is particularly odd. It's constantly referenced in movies and tv shows - indeed, I think there was a whole episode of Friends built around the apparently hilarious idea that Joey got a "man-bag", or a "murse".

What the hell is the problem with a man having a bag? If America isn't "ready" for men with bags, it's hard to imagine America being ready for a president with a boyfriend.

(Of course the other one is Speedos. America thinks men in Speedos is weird/gay/hilarious.)

If voters in that state are ready to elect gay representatives, then I think most voters in swing states probably don't care about the sexuality of a candidate. The mayor of Houston is a lesbian, so obviously urban voters don't care, and that's where Democrats get most of their votes anyways.

It is terribly bizarre, but even considering whatever hang ups Ireland may still have with masculinity, the streets of Dublin are full of men carrying bags. And really, at the end of it, for practical reasons. It just makes sense.

Ironically, I find the standard 'preppy' American straight man quite effeminate. I think it's the speech patterns with whatever one might call the 'standard' American accent.

Good post, and I think you're mostly right about America not being ready for a gay president. In all likelihood though, I can't imagine any Democrat being turned off a candidate because he or she is gay. That's 72 million Americans right there. Democrats are never going to win in the South anyways, so a gay Democratic presidential candidate is at least plausible. Also, there are 4 gay members of congress - 2 are from New England, one is from Wisconsin; no surprises there, all those states are pretty liberal. But the other guy is from Colorado, which is one of the most important swing states. If voters in that state are ready to elect gay representatives, then I think most voters in swing states probably don't care about the sexuality of a candidate. The mayor of Houston is a lesbian, so obviously urban voters don't care, and that's where Democrats get most of their votes anyways. It's also fairly safe to say that Barack Obama will be the last Democratic nominee who doesn't support marriage equality. So, America might not be ready at present, but I think Carter is right that it won't be too long before the US is ready to elect a gay president.

Good post Panti. I guess middle America's aversion to the idea of a gay President may have something to do with the fact that the United States is a highly militarised society with the result that homosexuality is deemed to be the very antithesis of leadership and strength. One could indeed draw a parallel with this thinking and Putin's risible recent p.r. campaign to portray himself as the strong man of Russia. Perhaps, were homosexuals allowed to serve openly and effectively in the US Army, this may in some way help to erode steadfast stereotypes in relation to the capabilities of homosexual men. Interesting to note that the NY Times article posits that America may be ready for a Lesbian president before countenancing the idea of a gay President. As for the man-bag/ speedos dilemma, I think we here in Ireland lean more toward the view in Boston than Berlin but we are beginning to flirt with a more European attitude to our various accroutrements...
